Description

France’s art market is continued to be viewed as one of the broadest and most diverse in the world, competing with the likes of the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). In 2017, the French art market was reported to be growing by 48%, with a 2017 survey declaring France’s turnover as the fourth highest out of the top 20 countries, closely following China, the US and the UK.

A new generation of collectors in France is emerging, currently 3% of global collectors, responsible for building some of the most important collections in the world and notorious for discovering emerging and innovative artists from diverse backgrounds. French collectors are largely located in the vibrant capital city, a melting pot of arts, fashion and culture including art fairs such as the FIAC. French collectors are not only accumulating impressive private collections, but also opening them up to the public. For example, the owner of Christie’s auction house François Pinault, who owns one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary art, containing over 3,000 works, displays internationally lending works to exhibitions all over the world, has a new museum set to open in Paris in 2019.

Other recently established museums and institutions have been recently founded by France’s growing selection of art collectors and patrons and contribute to France’s innovative and expanding market. These include the outdoor sculpture gallery Domaine du Muy opened in 2015 by collector and dealer Jean-Gabriel Mitterand and the Venet Foundation founded in 2014 by sculptor Benar Venet.
